Germany's Rewe Group Wins NACS Sustainability Award 2017

The National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) has awarded German retailer Rewe Group with the 2017 NACS Insight European Convenience Retail Sustainability Award.

The award was presented at the NACS Insight Convenience Summit–Europe awards dinner in London on 14 June. It recognised Rewe Group for its ‘leadership in developing and implementing sustainable strategies and making sustainability a core aspect of the company’s mission’.

Rewe introduced its sustainability strategy over ten years ago, and has views sustainability as 'a process and a fundamental attitude that is firmly ingrained in its corporate culture'.

'Industry Pacesetter'

NACS says its judges agreed that Rewe Group is committed to being an 'industry pacesetter' and instilling sustainability into the collective conscious of society.

This commitment is based on Rewe’s 2010 guidelines for sustainable business practices, which note that sustainability is a fundamental element of the company's business strategy.

NACS added that the German retailer ‘assumes responsibility for its employees, works fairly with partners and suppliers, promotes more sustainable product ranges, acts in an environmentally and climate-friendly manner and serves as an advocate of biodiversity and a sustainable society’.

Ern Sherman, vice president of the Coca-Cola Company, which sponsored the award, said, “Coca-Cola is proud to recognise Rewe Group, which shares our passion for making a lasting, positive difference for businesses and communities”.

“Focusing on sustainability not only helps protect our world and resources, it is also good for business, and Rewe Group demonstrates its commitment through its four pillars of sustainability: green products, employees, energy, climate and the environment, and social involvement.”
