Lidl To Open 20 Additional Stores In Romania By End-2019

Lidl is to open five stores in Romania in the remainder of this year, and a further 20 stores next year, as it ups its investment in the country.

News portal News.ro reported Cristina Hanganu, Lidl Romania communications director, as saying that the group's aim is to grow by "15 stores per year, on average".

As well as increase its presence in major cities, Lidl also intends to move into more rural areas, ensuring it has a presence in all counties in the country. It also plans to open a fifth logistics centre.

The group currently operates some 230 stores across Romania, making it the third largest 'modern retail' player in the country.

Local Flavours

It has also sought to embrace Romanian food culture, with News.ro reporting that Lidl is currently operating a pop-up museum dedicated to authentic recipes and local flavours, at a location in the capital, Bucharest.

The Muzeul Bucatelor Ascunse, or 'Hidden Dishes Museum' will guide visitors through the various food customs of the country, while also seeking to promote its Cămara Noastră private label brand.

It will run until 29 September.
