Metro’s IT Unit Opens Third Office In Romania

Metro AG’s IT unit Metro-Nom has opened its third office in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca, which has been dubbed the Balkan country’s Silicon Valley.

The wholesaler also has IT units operating in Bucharest and Brasov in the country.

In both Germany and Romania, Metro-Nom is responsible for developing digital solutions for the company’s omnichannel business, e-commerce platforms, and address the global IT demands of Metro Cash & Carry stores.

Co-Working Space

The office in Cluj-Napoca has been designed as a co-working space that allows for collaborative work in a start-up atmosphere.

CIO of Metro AG and CEO of Metro-Nom, Timo Salzsieder, said, “Romania is a strong location for METRO-NOM. Almost half of our IT staff work there. Here, we appear under the brand Metro Systems.

"With the opening of the new hub in Cluj-Napoca, we would like to present ourselves as an employer in a city with a strong IT- and start-up community and attract new talents to our company.”

'International Challenges'

A software development factory has also been incorporated in its premises to give employees the opportunity to work on innovations, in teams, during business hours.

CEO of Metro Systems, Jürgen Boekholt, is of the opinion that the company’s new approaches towards building a modern working environment will give it a “unique selling proposition” in Romania’s job market.

“For our new office at the tech city of Cluj, we are looking for product owners, software developers and UI/UX designers who would like to work on exciting IT solutions and are looking for international challenges – because that is precisely what we are offering to our colleagues” Boekholt added.
