Romanian Supermarkets Required To Sell 51% National Products

The lower house of Romania's parliament has approved legislation stipulating that at least 51 per cent of food products on sale in the country's supermarkets and hypermarkets must be of Romanian origin.

The measure was adopted with 293 votes "for" and none against, and will now go to the country's President to be signed into law.

The MP who proposed the new law, Marin Anton, claims that Romanian producers and consumers will benefit from this legislation. It has been criticised by retail associations and supermarket groups.

In a statement to local portal Profit, the general director of Romania’s Competition Council, Daniela Badila, said that while the council does not oppose the law, it expresses doubt that it can be implemented in practice, as there may not be enough suppliers to fulfill the 51 per cent quota in many categories.
