Russian Discounter Torgservis Aims For Expansion Into German Market

Russian discounter Torgservis wants to enter the German market via a Berlin-based subsidiary called TS Markt, according to Retail Detail.

The discounter, which was founded in Siberia, has plans to open over 100 stores all over Germany.

The Russian group wants to fill the 'basic discounter' gap left behind by Aldi and Lidl, who have since opted for a more up-market concept, according to Retail Detail.

The chain wants to create stores that look like warehouses, with products still in boxes and placed on pallets and racks.

Some 95% of the store’s product range is private-label. After Germany, Torgservis is believed to be aiming to launch in Romania and Poland.

Torgservis is a largely unknown brand in Europe, and will have to adapt to EU quality rules in Germany, as well as Poland and Romania in the event the store expands there as planned, the news portal announced.
