Russian Retailer O'Key Opens New Format Compact City Hypermarket

Russian food retailer O'Key Group has announced the opening of a new format compact city hypermarket in Moscow.

The O'Key hypermarket located in Rio Mall at Dmitrovskoe Highway is the first hypermarket of a new format opened after reconstruction and rebranding.

The store will be O'Key’s 11th store in Moscow, and will feature a trade area of 5,928 square metres of retail space. It will have 29 checkout counters, including four express cash out desks.

It will have all the common supermarket areas, including a bakery and a beverages department, as well as an express café. It will also have a standalone Farmer’s Corner which will offer a selection of dairy products from various farms in the Moscow region.

It will employ over 200 people to manage its selection of over 25,5000 SKUs.

New Additions

New to the hypermarket is the self-scanning system, which will allow customers to do their shopping without any assistance from the store staff. Customers can simply scan electronic price tags and barcodes with the help of an individual self-scanner and make payments at the checkout counter.

Miodrag Borojević, CEO of O'Key, said, “The new format hypermarkets are more convenient for customers who can now complete their shopping journey within the optimal time frame, which is of strategic importance in the context of a highly competitive environment.

“While developing the new format, we have followed the global food retail trends, studied the best practices, implemented our own know-how and streamlined the in-store processes. We are confident that with the wide assortment, smart promotions and attractive pricing our renovated hypermarket will become the store of choice for the residents of the Northern district of Moscow.”

The Russian retailer recently reported annual revenues of RUB 117.5 billion (€2.32 billion) for the full-year 2017, a 1.14% increase year-on-year, as it looked to expand its Da! discount format.
