Sainsbury’s Launches New Plant-Based Food Range
Sainsbury’s is introducing a new private-label range of plant-based foods, with the aim of offering an ‘innovative solution for meat-free mealtimes’.
The UK supermarket chain says that shoppers are increasingly cutting down on the amount of meat that they buy, with more than a third of evening meals now containing no meat at all.
According to Sainsbury’s, one of the highlights of its new range is the Sweet & Smokey BBQ Pulled Jackfruit. The retailer says that the unusual fruit tastes like a cross between a pineapple and a pear, but can imitate pulled pork when cooked and seasoned, offering a new option that is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
The new range also features mushroom sausages and mince, and cauliflower steaks and burgers.
“With over a quarter of meat-eating Brits actively reducing their meat consumption, there is a clear appetite for exciting and new ways to introduce more vegetables into our lives,” said Georgina Lunn, product developer for fresh produce at Sainsbury’s.
“Our new range of plant-based products provide innovative, inspirational solutions for everyday meals – from our supermarket-first pulled jackfruit to the super-satisfying ‘Shroomdogs’. We’re really proud to be offering a wide choice of flavours and can’t wait to hear how our customers are using them,” Lunn continued.
The new range has been available online and in 500 Sainsbury’s stores since 1 January.
