CPG Demand Remains High In UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands: IRI

The latest edition of the IRI Demand Index and IRI Inflation Tracker, for week commencing 20 July, has found that demand in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector remains high in the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands, while demand in Italy is said to be 'stable'.

Demand for food products is outpacing that of non-food in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany, while the opposite is the case in France and Italy, the study found.

In Germany, non-food is decreasing due to lower demand for hygiene products, cosmetics and body care products, and laundry detergents.

According to IRI, each country is indicating different trends in food categories, but the overall trend is towards a moderate slowdown as countries return to a degree of normality.

In non-food, France has seen a decline in demand for beauty care products, which are lower than last year, while in Italy, there is lower demand for perfumery products, make up and body care. The Netherlands has seen an uptick in demand for the facial and body care categories, however.

The study also fond that prices continue to increase across all markets, with the UK posting the highest level of inflation during the period.

In the Netherlands, UK and France, the alcoholic beverages category is driving price inflation, while frozen food is also driving inflation in Italy and the UK, particularly in the ice creams and frozen desserts categories.

The IRI Demand Index monitors weekly changes in CPG purchases, by value sales, against the year-ago period across departments/aisles, categories and, in some countries, across retail formats and regions.

The IRI Inflation Tracker, meanwhile, tracks changes in the pricing of consumer-packaged goods, monitoring weekly shifts in consumer prices against the year-ago period across departments/aisles, categories and, in some countries, across retail formats and regions.
