Slovenian retailer Tuš will phase out eggs produced in battery cages in its private label assortment, reports local news agency Sta.
The supermarket chain aims to achieve this target by the end of 2020, according to the Association for the Protection of Animals Ljubljana.
The association, along with the Danas institute, had campaigned for supermarkets to discontinue selling eggs that are sourced from caged hens.
Sustainable Food Items
In a statement, Tuš officials said they support the initiative as a part of their commitment to sustainable production of food items. The company also highlighted the support received from Slovene producers, processors and suppliers over the years.
In Tuš, more than 70% of products on store shelves are of Slovenian origin.
Eggs produced by chicken raised in battery cages are no longer on sale in Hofer and Lidl stores in the country, and will also be taken off shelves in Spar, Eurospin and E.Leclerc.
The Society for Animal Protection Ljubljana and Danas collected over 13,500 signatures for the petition and handed them over to all food retailers in Slovenia.
So far, only Mercator and Jager have not responded to the initiative by non-governmental organisations to withdraw eggs produced in battery cages.
