Sonae Reduces CO2 Emissions By 13% Over Past Year

Portuguese retail and telecommunications conglomerate Sonae has announced that it has reduced its CO2 emissions by 13% over the past year, with energy consumption down by 1%.

The group made the announcement to mark World Environment Day, which takes place today (5 June).

Key Focus

"The environment is a pillar of Sonae’s sustainability policy, and so we seek efficiency and frugality in everything we do, to decrease the waste of resources and to maximise the value of each project,” said Sonae’s head of communications, Catarina Oliveira Fernandes.

“This culture has contributed to the continuous improvement of our carbon footprint, with important savings which are channelled in the development of our businesses, benefiting employees and clients, as well as the whole community”.

Sonae MC

In its retail arm, Sonae MC, the group has implemented what it describes as a ‘groundbreaking programme’ to turn waste into energy, processing more than 200 tonnes a year of organic waste, and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Its retail businesses have also been able to decrease water consumption by 3.3% over the past year, with energy consumption down by 2.5%.

‘The savings generated extra resources to invest in innovation, creating new products and services, in addition to improving service and customers’ shopping experience, which ends up contributing to increased sales,’ Sonae said in a statement.
