Spar Netherlands Expands 'Express' Convenience Store Concept

Spar Netherlands has opened its first Spar Express store at a filling station along a highway in Heemskerk, in the province of North Holland.

The retailer also opened a new Spar Express in Tilburg, in the southern province of North Brabant, and its second Spar City in Breda, also in North Brabant. Both Spar Express stores were opened at the beginning of the month.

The two new Spar Express outlets focus on grab-and-go items, along with sandwiches, meals, salads and take away soups. The in-store offering was compiled based on the experiences of Spar in other countries, according to the retailer.

The company introduced the Spar Express format in the country at the beginning of the year together with Euro Garages (EG Group), the operating company of Texaco service stations.

After three successful pilots on non-highway locations, two other Spar convenience stores have been added. These two stores are at high traffic locations, but Heemskerk is the first one to open along a main highway, according to Spar.

City Stores

The new Spar City in Breda is the second store after the launch of the first Spar City there in August 2016. The store offers a range of fresh and convenience products, including freshly prepared baguettes, sandwiches, fruit salads, croissants, fresh juices and coffee – all available for eating in or taking away.

The shop in Breda also boasts an extensive selection of meal deals for a quick breakfast, healthy lunch or easy dinner, according to the retailer.

The company says it sees room for over 100 Spar City stores in the country. The first one was opened in Rotterdam in October 2010, and the company anticipates that it will reach the 50-mark for those stores by the end of the year.

The company also recently opened two new university stores in Eindhoven and Delft, both of which focus on the needs of university employees, students and passers-by, and promote sustainability and healthier eating, according to the retailer.
