Spar Norway Launches Bread Price Scheme To Reduce Waste

Norgesgruppen, which operates the Spar brand in Norway, has launched an initiative that will see the price of fresh bread reduced by 50% during the hour before closing time, in a bid to prevent food waste. The scheme will be rolled out across Norgesgruppen's Spar and Eurospar estate.

"This is good news for our customers and for the environment," said Spar marketing manager Martin Munthe-Kaas.

"We have tested it in some stores and the results so far are very good. When we now launch the offer in all stores, we believe this is something our customers will use."

Food Waste

Spar Norway says that around 355,000 tonnes of food are thrown away in the country each year, and hopes that this new initiative will help fight food waste.

"This is a win-win situation. Spar has environmentally conscious customers and now they can save the environment while saving money," said Munthe-Kaas.

The retailer says that any of its freshly-baked bread that is not sold by the end of the day will be used as pig feed, to ensure that all produce is fully utilised.
