Strong Q1 Results For Spar UK

Investments made by Spar UK in improving its private label offerings, and broadening its range of wines over the past year have paid dividends, as the company reported an overall sales increase of 3.1% for the quarter to the end of July compared to the same period in 2009. Sales of own brand products rose by 4.4%, while wine sales were up 3.5% year on year. The 2,583 Spar stores located across the UK are all independently owned and managed, and with fresh food sales up 3.9% in the past 12 months it is clearly a retail network on the rise.

Spar Managing Director Jerry Marwood commented on the publication of the encouraging results "On a category basis, we’ve seen strong performances across our fresh food and our wine in particular. This suggests that every week we are now seen by our 15 million customers as delivering the products they need to make a home-cooked meal, to pick up food on the go or to buy some quality wine to go with the Sunday lunch.” The fact that Spar is making such strong inroads into the wine market will come as no surprise to many people. The retailers wine buying team has long been admired in the trade, and earlier this year Spar wine buyers Laura Jewell and Drar Nativ were poached by Tesco and Sainsbury's respectively.
