Spanish Retail Sales Grew By 3.1% This Summer Sale Season

Sales at small and medium retailers in Spain registered growth at an average of 3.1% (between 3% and 5% in different regions) this summer sale season, compared to last year.

As stated by the Spanish Federation of Commerce (CEC), this increase was 'positive', and followed a 'complicated' first quarter.

Small businesses have expressed their concern regarding the liberalisation of the sale season, which, since July 2012, every business has been able to start at its discretion. Before that date, it was typical for shops to launch the sale season together, on 1 July.

Manuel García-Izquierdo, president of the CEC, pointed out that this liberalisation of the sale season favours large retailers and chains, to the detriment of small businesses.
