More than 28.1 million eggs, potentially tainted with the insecticide fipronil, were delivered to the German region of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), before news of the scandal broke, according to the German newspaper Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
In a previous statement, the German government mentioned 10.7 million possibly-tainted eggs having entered the state, however, the newspaper's information comes via an analysis carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, which is based on data of the EU rapid alert system.

In addition, more than 17 million potentially-tainted eggs were exported from Niedersachsen to other parts of Germany. These numbers include batches from suspected Dutch farms, as well as from four German poultry farms in which the insecticide was detected.
Considering the "alarmingly large amounts" of eggs tainted with fipronil, the government’s strategy to play down the scandal did not prove successful, said Christian Meyer, Minister of Agriculture.
The ministry of Hannover said in a statement that all affected batches have been called back.
