Mexican bakery company Grupo Bimbo has opened a new production and distribution centre in Tejno, Colombia, following an investment of $86 million.
The new facility, located in Bimbo’s Industrial Park on the Medellin Highway, has a capacity of eight tonnes per hour and consists of four production lines to produce hamburger buns, snacks and puff-pastry buns.
The puff-pastry buns are a new category that was not previously available in Colombia.
Logistics Optimisation
Bimbo says that the proximity of the new centre to its existing plants will contribute to logistics optimisation, generate synergies, and facilitate the distribution process.
In line with the company’s sustainability and environmental management practices, the new plant has a waste water treatment plant, a waste reuse programme, and optimisation of energy use certified by LEED.
According to the president of Bimbo Colombia, Fernando López, the new facilities will expand the group's production capacity to meet current demand.
Mexico-based Grupo Bimbo is present in 24 countries in America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Its Colombian business experienced double digit growth in 2016.
