Carrefour Brasil To Double Sales Of Organic Products By 2020

Carrefour Brasil aims to double the sales of organic products in its stores by 2020, according to local media reports.

Exame reported that to meet this target, the retailer is strengthening partnerships with local suppliers to add more affordable products to its private-label organic assortment.

Carrefour forecasts that sales of organic products will reach R$ 500 million (€116 million) by 2022, accounting for 20% of total sales.

The Hurdle

According to data provided by Carrefour, 49 of the company's 100 hypermarkets in Brazil house a section dedicated to healthy products.

However, the higher price of organic food continues to act as a hurdle towards increasing sales in the category.

Presently, organic products are 25% more expensive than ordinary foods and the retailer's goal is to reduce this gap to 15%.

The reduction in prices, according to Carrefour, will not affect the company's profit margin due to an increase in sales.

Carrefour sells around 650 organic SKUs in Brazil, sourced from from several producers.
