Conad Adopts Zero-Emission Cold-Chain Technology

Conad is among the first big retail chains in Italy to adopt innovative technology that produces no emissions at controlled cold temperatures.

The technology provides significant energy savings, thanks to the use of a specially patented 'oil-free' turbine, resulting from American aerospace research.

The innovative technology will be used to effectively manage the cold chain in Conad’s CAP 2000A logistics centre in Fiano Romano, in the Lazio region, one of its major distribution facilities.

The new tri-generation installation will save about €47 per hour, compared to traditional technologies, with a total saving per year, in terms of primary energy, of more than 4,000 MWh and 350 Tep. This, in turn, translates to over 800 tonnes of CO2 not released into the atmosphere.

The technology is provided by the IBT Group, a company specialising in solutions for energy savings, and Zudek, which has provided the innovative refrigeration system.

Conad plans to expand this technology to other distributions centres in Italy.
