Croatians Paying Significantly More For Same Products Than Germans

A survey conducted by broadcaster Deutsche Welle has revealed that Croatians pay 30% to 110% more for the same FMCG than their German counterparts.

For the survey, 11 selected products (everyday foods and toiletries) were purchased in Germany and Croatia, and their prices compared. Most of them were cheap products that can be found in stores of hard discounters Lidl and drugstore chain DM.

According to the results, the same basket of products costs about HRK 45 (€6) more in Croatia than in Germany.

In the milk products category, 0,5l Lidl UHT milk costs €0.51 in Germany and €0.65 in Croatia; 0,5l Lidl yoghurt costs €0.45 in Germany and €0.63 in Croatia; while 200g Lidl fresh cheese costs €0.49 in Germany and €0.78 in Croatia.

Ten eggs purchased at Lidl in Germany cost €0.99, while the price in Croatia is 73% more expensive, at €1.70. Pasta costs €0.49 in Germany and €0.64 in Croatia, while the cheapest pudding (200g) in Germany can be purchased for €0.19, compared to Croatia where the price is €0.26.

Finally, an 800g jar of Nutella is available in Germany for €3.89, however the same product is 28% more expensive in Croatia (€4.96).
