Eroski Purchased More Than 3,000 Tonnes Of Sustainable Fish Last Year

Spanish retailer Eroski has announced that it purchased around 3,144 tonnes of fish with sustainability certification in 2019.

Out of the total, the retailer sourced more than 1,880 tonnes of MSC (Marine Stewardship Council)-certified fish, which guarantees that the catch is from sustainable fishing grounds.

The purchase also included approximately 820 tonnes of aquaculture fish bearing the GGN seal, provided by GLOBALG.AP.

GLOBALG.AP is an organisation that promotes safe and sustainable agriculture all over the world.

Eroski has claimed that it is the first retailer in Spain to have cleared the audits of both MSC and GLOBALG.AP for sustainably sourced fresh fish.

'Environmental And Social Sustainability'

Director of health and sustainability in Eroski, Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa, commented, "Fishing with a sustainability certificate is gaining space in our fishmongers. We thus offer guarantees to the consumer that the fresh fish with an eco-label, which he or she finds in our counters, comes from sustainable fisheries and productions.

"At Eroski, we work to permanently improve the standards of environmental and social sustainability of all the processes in the value chain, from the origin of production to store operations."

The retailer also sourced 392 tonnes of fish caught using cane fishing poles and 51 other fish varieties including tuna certified by AENOR's APR (Atún de Pesca Responsible) certification.

AENOR is a Spanish body dedicated to the development of standardisation and certification in all industrial and service sectors in the country.
