Italy's Granoro And Melinda Introduce Sustainable Packaging

Italian brands Granoro and Melinda have introduced new, sustainable packaging for products.

Pasta producer Granoro is offering its entire range of organic pastas in recyclable paper packaging.

The rustic-looking packaging consists of a cellulose envelope made with a layer of paper and a thin layer of plastic.

Certified Packaging

The composition of the packaging material has been approved by the Milano Experimental Station Innovhub and by the Centro Qualità Carta of Lucca, which certifies the possibility of disposing of this material sustainably.

The assessment of its recyclability was determined by the method Aticelca – the Italian Technical Association for Cellulose and Paper 501/13 – certified in accordance with UNI EN 113430.

The level of recyclability is the ability of the material to be processed to recover the cellulose fibres contained therein.

The new packaging will allow the Puglia-based pasta factory to reduce its plastic consumption by 35%.

It aims to produce around four million recyclable packages annually, to cover the packaging requirements of its entire organic line.

‘Ecological Product’

According to Granoro, the innovation has enabled the company to define its organic pasta as an ‘ecological product’, due to the combination of greater environmental sustainability in the production of durum wheat and the choice of packaging.

For its part, fruit and vegetable brand Melinda has launched two new eco-friendly, sustainable packaging solutions that limit the use of plastic in the packaging of apples.

The first is Biopap packaging, supplied exclusively by Ghelfi Ondulati.

It is an innovative package, produced in Italy, of four apples in pure cellulose, which is biodegradable, compostable and recyclable.

The tray, once empty, can be reused, and even placed in the microwave or refrigerator.

Waterproof Packaging

It preserves the characteristics of the food, and, being waterproof, it can also contain liquids.

The second is a film made of Pla, a biodegradable and compostable bioplastic that comes from the processing of corn.

It has been certified by the DIN EN 13432 (7H0052) and TŰV Austria ‘OK BIOBASED (S206)’.

This film, used to isolate apples from the open air, is able to preserve the freshness of the product and significantly reduce the environmental footprint of this packaging material.

Recently, Melinda increased the use of cardboard for many packages that previously used plastics, and it expects to roll out more innovations in packaging during 2020.
