Portugal Mandates Labelling Of Milk Origin

The Portuguese Government has passed legislation that requires suppliers to label the origin of milk and dairy products.

The new regulations are intended to enhance national milk production.

In a statement, the Government said that the decree 'governs the labeling of the origin of milk and of the milk used as an ingredient in dairy products, the marketing of caseins, caseinates and their mixtures for human use and the information for consumers which must be supplied with it'.

Specific Programme

The regulations also seek to implement the measures adopted last September in the 'Specific Programme for the Milk and Dairy Sector', designed to mitigate the challenges in the sector and bolster national production.

Announcing the new measure in February, the Minister of Agriculture, Luís Capoulas Santos, said that the new legislation requires that all dairy products, cheese, milk, yogurts, as well as all natural or processed dairy products, must mention the origin of the product.

He explained at the time that the legislation has a double objective. On the one hand, it will provide more information to consumers for them to make an informed choice and, on the other hand, ensure that Portuguese products are recognisable anywhere in the world.
