Rewe Group Publishes Sustainable Textiles Action Plan

Germany’s Rewe Group has published a new action plan to improve the working conditions for the retailer's textile suppliers.

The plan is part of a project to improve the ecological, social and economic conditions within its international textile supply chains, which Rewe committed to by entering the ‘Bündnis für nachhaltige Textilien’, an alliance for sustainable textiles, in 2015.

New Objectives

The action plan shows that Rewe Group has increased the amount of textiles consisting of sustainable cotton by 14% to 70% since 2015. In addition, all of Rewe’s textile production facilities are checked for the compliance of social standards and sewage quality.

“The recently adopted action plan includes our existing activities to promote sustainable textiles that we plan to continue in the future, as well as other, new target agreements,” said Torsten Stau, executive board member of Rewe Group.

“Overall, the action plan includes 100 objectives. I am happy that we have already published our action plan now, before the binding publication next year. This shows that we do not only stick with the alliance, but also report on our objectives in a transparent way.”

Rewe Group has also launched training programmes to support its suppliers in China and Bangladesh as they implement the new requirements. With these programmes, Rewe also seeks to improve the companies’ chemical management and social standards.
