Tesco Set To Downsize Hypermarkets In Poland: Reports

Tesco is planing to downsize its hypermarkets in Poland to so called 'compact hypermarkets', according to media reports.

News portal Wiadomości Handlowe said that the retailer was making the move due to the strong performance of its smaller stores in the country.

The reconstruction process is due to commence this month, and will see a simplification and reduction in assortment, as well as efforts to make the shopping experience easier for customers.

"Our decision to focus on smaller shopping formats reflects the changing expectations of Polish customers and trends on the retail market," Matt Simister, Tesco's Central Europe president, said.

As well as reconfiguring a number of its larger stores, Tesco Poland also said that it is finalising the sale of eight hypermarkets, in Bydgoszczy (ul. Toruńska), Gdyni (ul. Nowowiczlińska), Gorzowie Wielkopolskim (ul. Słowiańska), Piastowie (ul. Tysiąclecia), Rzeszowie (al. Powstańców Warszawy), Tychach (ul. Towarowa), Warszawie (ul. Fieldorfa) and Żarach (ul. Broni Pancernej), Wiadomości Handlowe reported.
