German discount supermarket chain Aidi has launched its first smartphone - the Medion Life E4001.
Priced at €98 (£79.99), it comes ahead of a handset launch by rival store Tesco later in the year.
The launch of the low-spec device is Aldi's first foray into the smartphone market.
The handset features a 4-inch 480 x 800 display, a 1GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM.
With 4GB of internal storage, its microSD card slot allows owners to expand the memory by up to 32GB.
Running Android 4.0, the affordable handset is two releases behind the latest version of Android available with another Android upgrade (Android L) being launched later this year.
It comes with a 2-megapixel camera and a 1300 mAh battery - allowing for just 180 minutes of talk time before needing a recharge.
The bottom-of-the-range device will appeal to price-conscious customers of the discount grocery store.
Aldi has also relaunched its popular Lifetab Android tablet at the same price as the smartphone, retailing at €98 (£79.99).
