Amazon Starts Online Food Sales In Italy

Online retailer Amazon has started selling a selection of ambient and long-life food products to customers in Italy.

Over 20,000 products are currently available, including leading brands such as Barilla, Valfrutta, Knorr, Rio Mare, San Benedetto, Mulino Bianco, Plasmon, Mellin, Huggies, Chanteclair, Dash, Scottex and Cuki.

Amazon Prime customers can choose one of the delivery options available, including unlimited free shipping of products for daily use at home in 24 hours, available in over 6,000 municipalities, or an evening shipping service, which allows customers to receive same-day products (currently available in the Milan area only).

With the goal of upgrading the service, Amazon has invited independent Italian food producers and retailers to offer their products online to customers, not only in Italy, but also abroad. As of September, both Italian producers and food retailers will be able to use Amazon Marketplace and sell their products on Amazon as third-party vendors.

A report by the eCommerce B2C Observatory of Milan Polytechnic reveals that in 2015, the Italian online food sector (grocery and food and wine) grew by 27 per cent on the previous year and is worth over €460 million.
