Asda Enjoying Exponential Mobile Shopping Growth

The number of customers ordering groceries from Asda by mobile is expected to double by the end of the year. The Walmart-owned supermarket says it is enjoying “exponential growth” in the number of mobile shoppers; 40 per cent of all orders placed on Asda Direct and George.com are now being picked up in stores by “click and collect” customers.

Asda now has ten million registered online customers. With six per cent of Asda’s online traffic now coming from mobile devices, the retailer says that half a million people have downloaded its transactional app to date.   Asda chief operating officer Judith McKenna said, “Customers don’t think in terms of channels or devices. They want to shop with ease, compare prices at the touch of a button and pick up a product or have it delivered with the minimum of fuss. As a result, the world of retailing is being transformed at a remarkable rate and opening up exciting opportunities for retailers like ourselves.” (31 May)   © 2012 ESM: European Supermarket Magazine
