E-commerce Sales Breaks 5% In Poland

Online retail is a steadily evolving distribution channel of the retail market in Poland, according to a new report.

The report by PMR shows that the e-commerce market's value in Poland will exceed PLN 30 billion this year, while it adds that it is also poised to double by the end of the current decade.

The report, Online retail market in Poland 2015. E-commerce market analysis and development forecasts for 2015-2020, found that the Polish e-commerce market is still in its "nascent" growth phase.

It notes that e-commerce in the country continues to become "more and more mature from year to year, as indicated by high saturation in selected sectors of online retail, e.g. home electronics, home appliances or consumer electronics. On the other hand, there are segments such as grocery retail, retail of children’s products or DIY which are in a very early phase of growth (the first of the listed segments) or are characterised by significant fragmentation (the other two)."

"Due to new developments in the IT technology and evolving consumer habits, the number of permanent Internet users, who also go shopping online, expands every year. Cheap and fast internet access available to households or through smartphones becomes more and more commonly available, as shown by GUS statistics," states PMR's findings.

The report adds that not only convenience but also price differences remain key factors driving the popularity of the e-commerce market.

"The enhanced growth projected for the coming years is expected to be related to the rapid growth of stores opened by the major market players and the overall condition of the economy which is projected to improve. As indicated by our forecasts, the value of the e-commerce market will double by the end of the current decade and then it will be close to a 10% share of the retail market as a whole," said PMR.
