Edeka Expands Bringmeister Same Day Delivery To Munich

German retailer Edeka has opened a new logistics centre near Munich, in collaboration with its online shopping platform Bringmeister.

The retailer said that the new facility will allow its Munich customers to have their purchases delivered within an hour, Mondays to Saturdays between 6am and midnight.

The new facility is situated in the Bavarian city of Olching, around 35km outside of Munich. It hosts an area of 6,000 square metres storing around 12,000 different items. These are cooled according to the newest standards, assembled by hand and delivered with modern refrigerated vehicles, according to Edeka.

The service includes Edeka’s private label brands, fresh fruits and vegetables, organic products from the Alnatura brand, as well as 60 products from the regional brand ‘Unser Land’ (our land), and over 70 items from the regional specialities of the ‘Edeka mein Bayern’ (Edeka my Bavaria) brand.

Orders can be made from bringmeister.de up to three calendar weeks in advance and Bringmeister guarantees an on time fresh delivery, or customers can get their money back. The purchases can be made cashless on arrival or online via PayPal or invoice, according to the retailer.

Modern Green Facility

According to Edeka, the new building is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, from its racking system and the forklift fleet, to the partially automated return of empties.

Bringmeister also works towards greener delivery systems, according to Edeka. For one, the warehouse has photovoltaic solar panels on its roof.

What's more, the delivery vehicles have a partially electric cooling system with environmentally friendly coolants that ensure continued cooling during stoppages at the warehouse, regardless whether or not the diesel motors of the vehicles are running.

Bringmeister has been part of the Edeka network since January 2017. The German retailer began offering same day delivery in Berlin last August.

The move came as Edeka was facing increasing competition from the online retail giant Amazon, which launched its AmazonFresh grocery delivery service in the German capital in May.
