European Supermarkets Need To Bolster Their Fraud Detection Systems Following Staples Breach, Warns Trustev

The news last week that another retail-related security breach had occurred in the US has highlighted the need for retailers to invest more in their IT systems in order to restore consumer confidence in this area.

US retail giant Staples said it was looking into a "potential issue involving credit card data and has contacted law enforcement."

The online fraud affected credit cards used in Staples stores in the North East of the US, according to the retailer.

Credit card thefts and online fraud have affected other major retailers in the US recently e.g. Target, Home Depot.

Following a recent wave of cyber crimes in Europe relating to supermarkets Tesco, SuperValu and Rewe, it is obvious that retailers and shoppers need to take action to limit personal data exposure to hackers.

Ecommerce fraud prevention firm Trustev has warned European supermarkets of the need to bolster their fraud detection systems following the latest incident.

European consumers should also watch their credit card statements for suspicious charges following the news, it added.

Trustev’s real-time online identity verification eliminates fraud from eCommerce transactions by verifying the authenticity of a customer’s social profile - examining data patterns and metadata for signs of suspicious activity, all while honouring the privacy of all users.

“Trustev’s digital fingerprinting technology automatically matches each user’s transactional, device, and browser data against all records in our database, identifying and eliminating troublemakers before they have a chance to defraud you,” said its CEO and co-founder Pat Phelan.

The increasing volume of attempts makes it impossible for merchants to manually screen each and every transaction, he explained.

Trustev has witnessed inflated fraud attempts from its global merchants in recent times.

“Many of these attempts are coming from behind fake IP and other forged credentials, which in normal cases would be accepted on the basis of the payment method - in this case, the stolen card numbers - being valid.”

The Trustev anti-fraud technology looks beyond this and works to identity the person making the transaction, weeding out this type of fraud.

“Our solution sits ahead of the checkout monitoring what’s going on, stopping the fraud before the card details are even entered.”
