Italian Food E-Commerce Sector Sees 43% Growth In 2017

The Italian food e-commerce sector is worth €849 million in 2017, or 4% of the total of the Italian digital commerce market,  a new study has found.

In addition, this sector registered an impressive growth rate of 43% this year, compared to 2016 volumes, reports news agency Ansa.

The findings were released during the Netcomm Focus Food conference, in collaboration with Fiera Milano, which took place ahead of the next edition of Tuttofood, scheduled from 6 to 9 May 2019.

The conclusion is that food e-commerce is increasingly becoming a part of the lifestyle of Italian consumers, offering growth opportunities to industry players that are more receptive to new distribution channels and tools.

According to data presented at the conference, the value of online food and beverage in Europe amounted to $10 billion (€8.5 billion) in 2016, with an annual growth rate of 13%. This figure is set to reach $18 billion (€15.3 billion) in 2021.

Similar figures are found in the US, while China looks set to experience an e-commerce explosion, rising from $10.9 billion (€9.2 billion) in 2016 to $30.3 billion (€25.7 billion) in 2021, with an average annual growth rate of 23%.
