Carrefour Gains On Leclerc At Top Of French Grocery Rankings: Kantar

The latest Kantar Worldpanel market share data for France revealed that Carrefour is gaining ground on rival Leclerc.

According to the data, from 11 June to 8 July, Géant Casino registered the fastest growth amongst the big players and gained 0.2 percentage points. Carrefour also gained 0.2 points, and now holds a 20.9% market share (compared to Leclerc's 21.3%). Finally, Delhaize and Aldi both saw their growth remain flat over the period.

As in the previous period the strongest growth was experienced in the online retail and convenience formats. According to Kantar's latest data, e-commerce gained 0.4% (versus 0.5% in the surveyed period last month) and rose to a market share of 6.3%.

Convenience stores gained 0.1 percentage points, while hypermarkets and supermarkets actually lost market share, dropping 0.3 and 0.2 points respectively.

This combination of growth in online and convenience stores is what allowed Carrefour to exhibit such a good performance in the latest period, according to Kantar.

Intermarché Stalls After Long Period Of Growth

This month, Lidl grew by 0.1 percentage points over the period, now holding a 5.5% market share. According to Kantar, the retailer gained over 226,000 new clients in the June-July period.

As in April, May and June, Leclerc is still the market share leader, but the most notable change in the latest data released by Kantar is the interruption of growth of Intermarché. The retailer had previously been on an 11-month run of continual growth in market share, which was stalled in the most recent period, where it achieved 'stable' results.
