Mercadona Invests In 'Contactless' Technology

Spanish retailer Mercadona has invested €5 million in the development and incorporation of its "Contactless" system.

This new project has been developed entirely by the IT department of the company, and has involved the installation of 16,000 new payment terminals in its network of stores.

As a result of this new system, customers can pay for their goods in Mercadona with Contactless devices – Visa, Mastercard, cell phones, bracelets, etc. This payment method is much easier and faster, as when the devices are brought close to the terminals, the transaction occurs immediately, without the necessity to insert a PIN in the case of purchases of under €20.

According to Amparo Rivera, supervisor for the development of this project, "We have developed and implemented the new contactless payment system to adapt to the needs of our 'Bosses,' and to make payments faster, more comfortable, and simpler but equally safe."
