A new smartphone app launched in Italy enables users to select healthy food options by simply reading barcodes and checking them against an online database of food products.
The Edo app, developed by an Italian start-up based in Cesena, analyses the ingredients on the label and the nutritional values of the products, based on a series of algorithms. After scanning the product, the app provides a score from zero to ten indicating how healthy a product is, a summary of its positive and negative features, whether it is suitable for celiac and lactose intolerant persons, as well as a list of healthier alternatives.
The intention of the developers is to add to the database every food product on the market by the end of 2015. Consumers can also actively help by suggesting products, submitting photos of the products, their ingredients and nutritional values.
The Edo app is available for free download for Android and iOS smartphones, but there are also plans for a premium version with additional features.
