Organic Food Sales Set New Records In Denmark

Organic food sales in Denmark increased by 9% year-on-year in 2019, to DKK 14.1 billion (€1.89 billion), accounting for 12% of total sales, according to the latest data from Statistics Denmark.

Organic milk, grains, flour and vegetables emerged on top of the Danish shopping list, but other product categories also saw a significant increase in demand, indicating that organic food has become mainstream for most Danes.

The desire for more organic products among Danish consumers is also reflected in the constant growth in organic food sales over the past five years.

The study listed spirits (+34%), wine (+19%), cookies and crackers (+28%), rye bread (+23%), and frozen vegetables and potato products (+45%) as the top five fastest-growing organic products in 2019.

Sales of organic vegetables grew by 16% year-on-year, while organic plant-based drinks saw a 22% jump in sales to DKK 169 million (€22.70 million), up from DKK 139 million (€18.67) in just one year.

Market manager for retail at Organic Denmark, Henrik Hindborg, commented, “This is an exciting trend that signifies that organic foods are factored into the general spending of Danes and have become an entrenched part of our everyday lives, where each Dane spends DKK 2,418 (€324.78) annually on organic food.”

This constant growth has been attributed to the desire for clean, healthy and sustainable food items, as well as the increased availability of innovative and interesting organic products.

According to Hindborg, more families are thinking in terms of sustainability and reducing their meat consumption, and are aware that an organic lifestyle does not need to cost more.

“That is why we are now seeing the growth of a new type of organic consumer. It includes those aged 50-59 as well as larger families with children, who in the past have been slightly more price-sensitive than the traditional organic consumer,” he added.
