Intermarché Continues Opening Drive In Portugal

France's Les Mousquetaires invested nearly €14 million in the opening of three new Intermarché supermarkets in Portugal during September.

The 1,500 square metre store in Fernão Ferro (municipality of Seixal), which opened following an investment of €5.5 million, features a cafeteria and takeaway section, as well as fish, butchery, health and wellness and pet food departments, a wine cellar and a laundry service.

The retailer invested €5.3 million in a 2,000 square metre supermarket in Barcelos (district of Braga), which features a number of environmentally-friendly technologies, including a solar park. The commercial area includes a wine cellar, a large and modern cafeteria, and a takeaway service.

Next to the store, visitors can also find charging points for electric vehicles, an area reserved for motorhomes, a petrol station and a new Bricomarché DIY store.

The third new store is in Quinta da Piedade (municipality of Vila Franca de Xira), which follows a €3 million investment. In the 890 square metres of retail space, customers can find a selection of meats from national producers, a variety of fish and seafood and also a new area featuring wellness and bio products.

Store Investment

The retailer is planning to invest a total of €36 million in the opening of 11 Intermarche stores in Portugal during 2020. Since the start of the year, it has opened six stores, including in Samora Correia (following a €5 million investment), Armamar (€1.8 million) and Alcanede (€1.5 million).

As well as Intermarche, the French retail group is also present in Portugal with its Bricomarché and Roady banners, encompassing a total of 331 stores.

Les Mousquetaires is hoping that the new units will help it achieve its growth targets for 2020. Last year, the group generated €2.3 billion of revenue (+3%) and the aim is to grow this by 10% in the food segment and 15% in the DIY segment.

According to recent data published by Kantar, Intermarché had an 8.8% share of the Portuguese retail market in August, up 1% year-on-year.
