Pyaterochka Rolls Out 'Smart Store' Technology To Cut Energy Consumption

Russia's X5 Retail Group has announced that it has rolled out Smart Store technology in four Pyaterochka stores in Moscow.

Through this initiative, the retail group aims to reduce the energy consumption of these outlets by around 4.9%.

Electricity is one of the three largest SG&A (selling, general and administrative) expenses for the retail group, accounting for 80-85% of a store's utility bill, X5 said.

Smart Store integrates special sensors, control devices, and software into existing processes, to reduce energy consumption, automate equipment control, and minimise the risk of accidents.

The Project

As part of the project, the retailer identified refrigerators, lighting, air conditioning and ventilation, and air curtains as the four main contributors to its electricity bill.

It has implemented complete automation to control refrigeration equipment, lighting and other energy-consuming devices in the four stores.

The devices are also being prepared to adjust to external conditions for optimum energy use, X5 said.

Expansion plans

In the near future, Pyaterochka plans to extend Smart Store technology to 120 outlets .

From 2020, all newly opened and refurbished Pyaterochka stores will be equipped with this technology, the retailer added.
