Rewe Group Guarantees Minimum Purchase Price For Pork

Rewe Group is to pay German pig farmers purchase prices for pork in line with market rates set before the outbreak of African swine fever and the collapse of the export market.

The group will also expand its partnership with small and medium-sized producers in Germany.

African Swine Fever

African swine fever is highly contagious and deadly to pigs and boar but does not affect humans.

Hans-Jürgen Moog, head of purchasing at Rewe Group, said the reason for this move is to end "the acute crisis facing German pig farmers."

Moog emphasised that the group is also focusing on long-term plans, such as the sustainable development of domestic agriculture.

Position Paper

To this end, the company has drawn up a position paper that is being discussed with the German Farmers' Association and the 'Land schafft Verbindung' (Land Creates Connection) movement.

The position paper aims to strike a deal with German farmers aimed at consolidating ties with local producers by offering to promote products of German origin, expand regional meat programmes and implement measures to strengthen the German dairy industry permanently.
