Rivals Lidl & Aldi Introduce Contactless Payment In UK

Rival discounters Lidl and Aldi have both introduced in-store contactless payments in the UK.

Aldi is currently running a trial in selected stores, while rival Lidl has begun roll-out of the technology to 580 outlets, following a successful trial.

Ingenico's iPP350 contactless payment system was initially introduced into Lidl's pilot stores in February 2013.

"The system has been introduced to meet customer demand for a wider choice of payment options", a Lidl spokeswoman said.

"This will allow payments to be made more quickly, which is an advantage to both our customers and our staff."

Contactless payment allows customers to pay for goods up to the value of £20 without entering a PIN code, instead simply holding their payment card near to the card reader to complete the transaction.

Contactless payment technologies have been rolled out by a number of retailers over the past year, including Costcutter, M&S and the Co-operative Group.
