French grocery retailer Système U is to introduce EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) technology to its day-to-day operations.
The introduction of the software technology aims to improve data quality in the supply chain.
EDI involves the electronic transfer of text files containing orders, invoicing and other communications between a retailer and a supplier.
The data-related technology replaces paper-based procedures and allows for smoother processing of such tasks.
The decision to implement a supplier extranet will help Système U to simplify its communication with suppliers.
The retailer will use EDI technology by software supplier Agena 3000.
The retailer will carry out tests with a number of FMCG suppliers.
Tests will then be run with meat, bakery, fresh produce and household products.
Competing retailers such as Auchan have used EDI for a number of years.
