Tesco Becomes Largest Contactless Retailer In Ireland

Tesco has become the largest contactless retailer in Ireland, with the installation of more than 2,200 contactless payment terminals across the country.

The retailer completed a national roll-out of the technology to all of its 149 stores earlier this year, and now its customers complete an average of 330,000 contactless payments a week.

"Our investment in contactless technology enables us to help our customers in a small way everyday by offering quick and convenient transactions in all of our stores," said Geraldine Casey, people and IT director at Tesco Ireland.

"Our customers are responding well to this offering, with transactions in our stores now accounting for 10% of all Visa contactless transactions in Ireland.”

Popular Payment Method

The popularity of contactless technology has been increasing across the Irish retail sector. According to Visa, the amount of transactions made each week has grown to over three million.

The company added that the increase in payment threshold from €15 to €20 has had a 'significant impact' in the growth of the payment format.

“As the popularity of contactless payments amongst Irish consumers continues to grow rapidly, it is great to see one of Ireland’s largest retailers leveraging the advantages of contactless payments, enabling their customers to benefit from a faster and easier checkout experience," said Philip Konopik, Visa's country manager for Ireland.
