Tesco To Introduce 'New Supermarket Concept' To Central European Markets

Tesco is planning to roll out a new supermarket concept in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, with ‘four to six branches’ in the largest cities in each country, according to reports.

The as-yet unnamed concept will be rolled out in new locations, however modernisation of existing stores is also being considered.

The new store format will place additional focus on fresh and food to go products, the range will be somewhat reduced, and special attention will be given to product ‘islands’ promoting particular segments.

Timeframe

It is likely that the first supermarkets operating under the new concept will be created in the next year or so, with the remainder to be developed in the next two to three years, news portal Wiadomoscihandlowe.pl reported.

In an interview last September, Tesco Central Europe’s Matt Simister told Wiadomoscihandlowe.pl that the retailer intends to “develop a format that will be better suited to the needs of today's consumer”, adding that at the time he could not “talk about the details, nor about the calendar for launching this project.”

Other changes outlined by Simister earlier this year include a refresh of the facade of some of Tesco’s stores in Poland, and improving back office facilities for its staff.

Earlier this month, Tesco announced that it is planning to close three of its Polish outlets next year, in Łódź, Konstantynów Łódzki and Tuchów.
