Tesco Introduces New 'Gourmet' Avocado Variety

UK retailer Tesco has announced that it is launching a gold-flecked 'gourmet' avocado variety in its stores across the country.

Gem avocados, in addition to their natural gold flecks, feature a smoother and creamier taste as well as a thicker skin because they remain on the tree for a longer period of time.

Tesco says that demand for avocados has increased by more than 30% in the last year, mainly driven by the growing interest in healthy eating. The new gem avocados, currently produced by licensed growers in South Africa, will be supplied from several countries.

This variety will be available in almost 200 Tesco stores in the UK from 25 September, with two pack sizes costing £3 and  £2.75, respectively.

“This outstanding avocado stands out from other varieties because of its rich taste, melt in the mouth texture, smooth creaminess and slight nuttiness," said Tesco avocado buyer Andrew Pattison.

“It’s not the kind of avocado you will want to mash up and turn into guacamole but rather show off as a special treat at a dinner party as either an exotic entrée or part of the main dish.”

Tesco also recently sold a mini avocado variety called a Zilla Egg, as well as the giant Avozilla, which is five times the size of a standard avocado.
