Tesco Teams Up With Toast Ale To Turn Surplus Bread Into Beer

UK retailer Tesco is teaming up with Toast Ale, a brewery that uses left-over bread to make craft beer and help reduce food waste.

Toast's Bloomin' Lovely Session IPA and Much Kneaded Craft Lager will now be available at Tesco stores.

"Being stocked by Tesco is a huge achievement for us," said Louisa Ziane, chief brand and finance officer at Toast Ale. "As well as being the UK’s largest supermarket, we see Tesco as also leading the other supermarkets on tackling food waste."

Bread Beer

Toast Ale was launched in January 2016, and since then the company says that it has saved 10 tonnes of bread, but aims to increase this number to 100 tonnes in the next three years.

"We started Toast because we wanted to start a conversation about our food system and give people an easy and delicious way of doing their bit," said Ziane. "Targeting bread was intentional - it’s the UK’s most wasted food item, with 44% wasted across the whole food chain."

The company describes its project as a 'pint-sized fight against food waste', and donates its profits to sustainability charity Feedback.
