Tesco Unveils Range Of Low-Alcohol Wines

Tesco has unveiled a series of five low-alcohol wines, which, it says, are virtually indistinguishable in taste from their higher-alcohol counterparts.

The range includes a Cabernet Tempranillo, a Grenacha-Rosé and a Sauvignon Blanc, with the latter two also available in sparkling variants.

Tesco says that an innovative spinning-cone technique was used in the production of the wines, removing the alcohol content while preserving the taste.

“Consumption of alcohol in the UK is down by 18% over the last decade, and we're seeing more customers looking for a quality wine-drinking experience without the alcohol,” commented Tesco wine expert Alexandra Runciman.

“In recent years, we've seen improvements in the quality and range of low- and no-alcohol ciders and beers, which have put the wine equivalent firmly in the shade,” Runciman continued.

Each of the wines is 0.5% ABV and has been developed in partnership with leading international wine producers Félix Solís. They will be available in more than 700 stores across the UK and priced from £3.

Prior to this launch, methods to produce de-alcoholised wine included removing the alcohol and replacing it with sugars and artificial flavours, or fermenting grapes until they reached the point of turning alcoholic without actually becoming wine.
