Thai Union, WWF Release First Sourcing Transparency Report

Seafood giant Thai Union has announced that it has released its first sourcing transparency report for wild caught fish and shellfish, in association with WWF.

Commitment To Transparency

The report is a part of Thai Union’s commitment to transparency in its operations and implementing measures to build a sustainable supply chain.

Global director of sustainability at Thai Union, Dr Darian McBain, said, “This report allows us to not only identify the areas where we need the most focus and take action ourselves, but, by providing this data openly, we can demonstrate our commitment to transparency and our sustainability journey.”

The Report

During the four-year partnership, WWF assessed and advised Thai Union on the sustainability of its seafood.

The report, developed jointly by WWF and Thai Union, includes a sustainability assessment for each wild-caught species present in the supply chain.

The assessment was based on supply chain data shared by Thai Union including information on vessels, species, catch methods, and catch areas.

'Important Step'

Director of food strategy at WWF, David Edwards, said, "WWF has been working with Thai Union to prioritise resources to improve its European supply chains and are delighted that the Thai Union has taken the important step of committing to full transparency of their European seafood supply chain."

The findings from the report have been used to assign priority levels to fisheries.

Based on these priority levels, fishery improvement projects have been developed and implemented.
