UK's The Co-operative Unveils Electric Bike Delivery Service

UK retailer The Co-operative has announced the introduction of a new delivery service via electric cargo bikes.

The service is initially available for shoppers within a four kilometre radius of its Kings Road store in Chelsea, London, with plans to roll it out to a further eight London stores.

“This is an exciting time for the Co-op, with trials underway on a number of new, online initiatives," commented Chris Conway, head of food digital at the Co-op. "As the leaders in convenience shopping we want to look at different ways of bringing our award-winning products closer to shoppers, and this new service does exactly that.”

The zero emission bikes are human powered but also feature an electric motor for assistance. Shoppers using the service will receive their orders within two hours, and there is a standard £5 delivery charge and a £15 minimum spend.

The group is exploring various delivery services around the UK, to bolster its e-commerce capabilities – in Milton Keynes, the group is trailing the use of robots to make small deliveries from a local store.
