Asda To Remove Plastic Forks From Salads And Protein Bowls

UK retailer Asda is to remove plastic forks from its own-brand salads and protein bowls as part of its pledge to ‘Use less and recycle more’.

The new packaging for salads, without plastic forks, will be rolled out on 25 June.

The initiative will result in reducing over 24.5 million plastic forks each year across its own-brand salads.

It is the equivalent of 41 tonnes of plastic or the weight of approximately 55 cows, the retailer added.

Sustainable Packaging

Asda’s director of produce, Kevin Patel, said, “We know that customers like the ease of picking up salads and fresh produce on the go, but we know they are passionate about the environment plastic pollution, which is why we have made the decision to remove plastic forks so our customers don’t have to choose between living sustainably and shopping with ease.”

The retailer has removed around 21.6 tonnes of plastic from its Extra Special Asparagus range by getting rid of the plastic tray in its packaging.

It has enabled the retailer to remove approximately 256 tonnes of plastic this year from its fresh produce section.

Last year, the retailer pledged a 15% reduction in plastic from the packaging of private-label products by 2021.
