Coop Switzerland has announced plans to hike wages by 1% in 2021 and strengthen minimum wages.
The initiative follows negotiations between Coop and its social partners, and will see the retailer increasing the minimum wage.
All employees working for wages below CHF4,700 will receive a general increase, while the minimum wage and the reference wages will be raised by CHF100 per month, the retailer added.
In addition, wages above the are CHF4,700 range will be adjusted individually.
A Welcome Move
The initiative has been welcomed by Coop’s social partners Kaufmännischer Verband, Syna / OCST, Unia and the Association of Employees Coop (VdAC).
The partners said that employees were ‘heavily burdened’ this year due to the pandemic and ‘deserve’ this raise as their work is an essential service.
The working condition in Coop is among one of the best in the Swiss retail sector.
It pays two-thirds of the pension fund contributions, offers attractive training courses, loyalty bonuses, and other discounts to its employees.
