Kaufland Introduces Lower-Carbohydrate Potatoes To Fresh Assortment

German retailer Kaufland is now offering a variety of potatoes with lower carbohydrates as part of its fresh assortment, to address consumer demand for lower-carb products.

The new Coronada variety contains on average 30% less carbohydrates than other potatoes, and Kaufland is the first retailer to offer these potatoes on sale in its stores.

The retailer also sells low-carbohydrate noodles, muesli, bread and cookies.

The Coronada potatoes are distributed under the brand name Linella.

Together with its long-time partner Europlant Pflanzenzucht, Kaufland developed the innovative tuber so that the carbohydrate content could be reduced by just under one third.

Each Linella potato has around 60 calories per 100 grams while a conventional potato has around 70.

"Our customers are increasingly asking for low-carb products that they can integrate into their everyday lives", explained Dietmar Frötscher, head of purchasing for fruit and vegetables at Kaufland.

Furthermore, the potato is cultivated according to environmentally-friendly standards and is especially suitable for salads, baking and roasting.
